WHO WE ARE

Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC) is a cancer of the nose and throat and is endemic in certain parts of Asia and Indonesia. In Indonesia it is the most frequent cancer in head and neck, and rates as the 4th most common malignant tumor in males.

The disease is directly related to Epstein Barr virus infection (EBV). It has a remarkable racial and geographical distribution with complex interactions of genetic, viral and environmental co-factors. The rates are twice, sometimes three times, as high in males as in females. The incidence starts at childhood and reaches a plateau between 45 and 55 years of age. But even younger age peaks have been reported; starting from 10-19 yrs old.

The relatively high frequency of NPC among the younger population seems to be characteristic of Indonesia (20% are under the age of 30). The overall incidence is 6.2/100,000 inhabitants, which means that roughly every month in Indonesia more than 1,000 new cases can be detected. Most patients come to the clinic at too late a stage for effective treatment.
